The workshop is part of Alissa's EME >> residence project "Realidade Diminuida ' which took place between 6-18 September 2010.

The authors put themselves in the future as characters who can transform their communities and lives. All the characters are real and their activities are projections into the future where the children see themselves as agents of transformation of their local reality.

The festival DISTANCE took place between Sat 19th and Sun Jun 20th of June at Stoke Newington International Airport. I sent 16 invitations by airmail from Rio de Janeiro to Stoke Newington International Airport in London ...

"Somebody has told me it's summer solstice"
"Yes, I'm investigating whether the sun is really standing still"
"Continue..."
"I need you to stand still for just one minute. Film the landscape to frame the sun's position in the sky against the horizon. The card you pick will reveal the hour you are entrusted to observe."
"How?"
"With a digital camera. Prompt action is called for, you have until midnight to upload your film. I will have 4 hours from UK midnight/ 9 pm BR to edit the films into a sequence to be projected on Monday 21st at 17:17 here in Rio"

The result was 14 x 1" minute films sent on Sunday 20th June by midnight in London and the films are edited together by midnight in Rio on the same night. On Monday 21st June at 17:17 pm (BR) an event takes place in Alto São Conrado, in the community where this trans-atlantic experiement took place. A looking glass was built especially for this performance where the 14 minutes on sun-light of Britain's longest day were transported to Rio and projected into it, in a sequence as twilight commenced in Rio on our shortest day of the year in the southern hemisphere.

A very special thanks goes to Lottie Leedham and Neil Callaghan for their support from London. Living Machines

From a macro to a micro landscape. The plants have a different time comparing to ours and our relation with the nature goes in many different ways.

Ivan Henriques is doing a research in ‘green spaces’ in Holland with a specific interest in artificial landscapes as Botanical Gardens, green houses and plants, within the nature in cultural aspects, their own behavior and how the nature is interfered by man. The botanic systematization, the dissemination of different species all over the world and dialogs between natural and artificial processes are also subjects in my field of research.

This research of the landscape is a continuation with GEMA project that I have been developing in Rio, since 2007. This research involves natural and urban environment, the change of the landscape through the time due to the cities expansions. How we can have a better living with our environment instead of killing it using the technology we have nowadays? The next step for nature is engineering, creating a self controlled environment and recycle the resources. I am researching also about plants and politics into a bio-scientific sphere. The Mata Atlantica forest was destroyed by the uncontrolled growth of the cities and now Amazonia is also in danger. There are several multi-national companies in Amazonia: a cycle of destruction that starts killing the trees of the forest for agronomy, cattle raising, scientific researches, trafficking of plants, and so on. It is estimated that 15% of the Amazon has been deforested.

There is also a discussion about the internationalization of Amazonia forest which is a political aspect. A dispute of territory is going on and how an artistic practice can make a thought about this relevant issue.

This was happening in Brazil since the colonization time, and now? Do Brazil still in a technological colonization concerning the bio-scientific power?

The research about resources of the nature started with professor Bert van Duijn, from the Biology University in Leiden for a couple of months in how we can measure the action potential of the plants.

Every plant has its own action potential. The goal of this project is to have different plants and show how we can use their signal to make them move by themselves; a network to create an engineering project. Plants are connected with wires and analog systems; their potential triggers an engine. Is it possible to empower the plants? Is possible to make plants turn on a machine? If the plants and trees from the forest have power to move, would they save themselves from deforestation?

I was invited to realized this project at V2 - Institute for the Unstable Media, in the summer residency 2010, to develop this work with Bert van Duijn, Hortus Botanicus from Leiden and V2 team.

Dark Forest collaboration with Active Ingredient

I began collaborating with the group Active Ingredient, based in Nottingham UK with the education outreach program of their beautiful project Dark Forest. A schools exchange concept, to connect a group of young people between the two forests of Sherwood in Nottingham and Tijuca in Rio. The initiative aims to bridge through technology and art activites a space between England and Brazil, and hopes to realize some examples through practical art workshops. It is an ambitious ground for interplay, which links two distinct and far places with a common interest. Our forests and our shared world environment. NEA (Núcleo de Educação Ambiental) of the Botanical Gardens in Rio accepted my invitation to support the project and proposed a local state school to work with me and Active Ingredient in Nottingham on a series of workshops, with the support also of artist and botanist Bruno Rezende (Department of Environment and Tecnology) also of the Botanical Gardens who I also had recently met in Rio. Active Ingredient began to simultaneously work with the Djangoly City Academy in Nottingham and the the state school in Rio; Camilo Castelo Branco, nominated by NEA to develop this work with. I chose the Botanical Gardens in Rio is the ideal starting point for these first experiments to take place. Its rich history and resources would support the workshops, paving the way to future collaborations, between trees, people and indeed continents.

EME @ A Gentil Carioca Gallery

EME was invited to be exhibited at the A Gentil Carioca Gallery throughout February until Saturday March 6th 2010. This gallery is one of the most exciting contemporary art spaces in Rio de Janeiro and acts as an epicentre for artists, curators, designers, movers and shakers from these shores and far beyond. The invitation by the curators of this Abre Alas; Beatriz Lemos, Felipe Scovino and Guga Ferraz, to participate in this pre-carnival annual collective, was a unique opportunity to promote awareness of this ongoing project and allows for a space of reflection and discussions around the ambition of the project to a specialized and significant audience.

The public is invited to participate. Future editions of EME will undoubtedly involve the collaboration of a number of local and international arts professionals who have responded with interest to the installation, and wish to collaborate in the development of this mobile studio, the vehicle as a concept, its social and environmental impact, currently is focused in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The exhibition shows the fertile results from site-specific public/ live arts and interventions aimed at developing awareness and involvement between communities and institutions in the preservation of our shared environment, both urban and natural.

The project EME was presented in the gallery as an installation entitled: Experimento No. 7.

" A geographic space returns to the drawing board. A Map is drawn from a circumference where the city of Rio de Janeiro is the central axle. Significant points are marked and interconnected. Reflections between time, space, experience and situation. A composition is created over the results obtained from within a mobile unit of research and site-specific action. This work takes a virtual object into the gallery and negotiates an immateriality in material. The public is invited to mobilize within a landscape, and throw a dice. There are six directions which are starting points, by throwing the cube, destiny is revealed. Your position and function questioned."

Um espaço geográfico retorna a um espaço plano sobre um cavalete. Um mapa é apresentado. Partindo de uma circunferência formado por um eixo central, a cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Pontos marcados, são interligados. Reflexões entre linhas de tempo, espaço, experiência e situação. Uma composição é criada sob resultados obtidos dentro de uma unidade móvel de pesquisa e ação site-specific. Este trabalho leva um objeto virtual para dentro da galeria,negociando uma imaterialidade em material. O público é convidado para mobilizar-se dentro de uma paisagem, e jogar um dado. Existem seis direções como ponto de partida, e ao lançar o cubo, um destino é revelado. Sua posição e função questionados."

EME arrives into the gallery space and intervenes directly with the architecture it is presented with. An air conditioner cools this part of the gallery which we choose to display. Representative of many, if not most indoor spaces in Rio, this space relies on this somewhat archaic cooling machine to make for a 'livable' environment, especially in the summer months where temperatures outside reach 40 degrees Celsius, and keep on rising. The proposal to bring into the gallery the four-leaf clover is two-fold. In its conception, EME used the four-leaf clover within its logo, for luck, as many would immediately relate, and this luck is aimed at the cause of our project, our endangered environment in Rio de Janeiro, the Guanabara Bay and the surrounding Mata Atlântica biosphere. The interference with the air-conditioner also proposes to re-think its use. To re-think the technologies around us. Highlighting a paradox, that without it, these specimens would die in the gallery. The air conditioner's energy is shared with a HQI lamp, of blue light installed immediately above it. The light has the property pertinent for the plants' production of photosynthesis. This machine's engineering efficacy is directed at sustaining the life of these plants for the duration of the exhibition and questions our dependence on such instruments. It is undoubtedly ironic that just outside these gallery walls we would find the most perfect conditions for life and growth. How would the environment react if everyone switched off? Unlikely this will ever happen, so in the very least we should all be looking for the numerous alternative cooling solutions that exist ( and which we can create) that do not equally heat the air outside. The EME project instigates this kind of thinking from the artist, institutions and investors and propose to investigate sustainable solutions in a practical way, through experimentation and play. The contructive impact within the communities EME proposes to reach with each residency is achieved by the artist´s own sense of function and position. Autonomous and uninhibitted, armed with their aesthetic and poetic skill.

Experimento No. 7 is a translation of my experience of the first edition of the project with the task of constructing an approachable installation which would invite the public to think about the spaces and themes around Rio de Janeiro the project sets out to approach.

EME, Estúdio Móvel Experimental, é uma residencia móvel de pesquisa integrada em meio ambiente e auto-sustentabilidade, entre arte, ciência e tecnologia dirigido pelos artistas Ivan Henriques e Silvia Leal. Um veículo customizado itinerante no Estado do Rio de Janeiro que começa suas ativiades em setembro de 2009. Este projeto é direcionado por artistas que desenvolvem esta plataforma interdisciplinar de pesquisa com foco na Mata Atlântica.

Os artistas e pesquisadores residentes no EME visitarão alguns municípios do estado do Rio de Janeiro também como festivais de arte, mídia e exposições. Uma de suas funções é alcancar público por meio de intervenções urbanas, publicações, documentação e interação utilizando plataformas de novas mídias como internet e redes sociais.

Através deste projeto multidisciplinar pretende-se enfatizar a conscientização ambiental, histórica e artística do Estado do Rio de Janeiro.

EME, Estúdio Móvel Experimental (Experimental Mobile Studio) is a mobile residency program that integrates art, science and technology to research the environment and self-sustainability led by the artists Ivan Henriques and Silvia Leal. This is a project directed by artists developing an interdisciplinary research platform that has the Guanabara Bay and its surrounding Atlantic Forest in focus.

This customized vehicle travels around the state to Rio de Janeiro and begins activity on September 2009. Resident artists and researchers will be visiting some of the cities of the State of Rio de Janeiro, as well as participating in festivals and exhibitions.

This multidisciplinary platform aims to reach a wider audience through public arts, interventions, documentation and new media communication tools. The project highlights an awareness of the environment, history and arts of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

The 1st Reunion of Human Traction Workers

This project was supported by the Secretary of Culture of Rio de Janeiro and Barracão Maravilha gallery, Rio, and led by artist Ivan Henriques.

The 1st Reunion of Human Traction took place on June 6th 2009, at Praça Tiradentes (Tiradentes Square), located in the heart of Rio de Janeiro city. A group of city center workers who transport, collect and sort urban residues and waste material, were invited to meet artists and professionals of different areas in order to stage an out of season carnival parade.

The 1st Reunion was a starting point from which a dialogue between these different groups can grow. Following this action GEMA will develop workshops and initiate meetings to discuss the city centre and create alternative solutions to access and mobility.

Project selected by Secretaria de Cultura do Estado do Rio de Janeiro.

By the fist time I wrote the project I was working at the Contemporary Art Museum of Niterói, RJ. This is an especial museum designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer. In the educational projects we were able to be in a privileged place where we can see the landscape of Rio and the Guanabara bay. A sublime site where you experience the history of Rio just pointing to natural and urban monuments, as the sugar loaf and the entrance of the bay. Me and Silvia where thinking about mobility in Rio but which function it would have?

I had also a fantastic experience to work with artist Nelson Felix who works with natural fenomena, culture, architecture, the time concept and so forth. So while writing the project, which by surprise (well, it carries the Experimental as a surname) I had the idea of puting all these ideas together and create EME's platform which after Silvia gave great inputs and fantastically directed the project in the 2nd edition in 2010 financed by FUNARTE, while I was doing my MA at Interfaculty ArtScience in Den Haag, NL.

I was invited by the British Council to introduce GEMA and EME to PARALELO having submitted an application to Artists Links for funding the project due to happen in Rio for the first time where Ivan had already been awarded by Rio's State Culture department to produce to first edition of the EME projects.
Ivan and I decided he would be the best representative of the project, since also I was in London, to attend the meeting and represent us the group. We worked arduously towards a presentation which we hoped I would be present virtually via Skype. Due to some tecnical problems at MIS, I was not able to participate as we had intende. But nevertheless the event was a great success and a unique opporunity to meet great artists, scientists and researchers working in the same field. The meeting also encouraged Ivan to apply to a Masters at Interfaculty in Holland, having met Taco Stolk. Before I left for Rio again I made a point of meeting Active Ingredient in Nottingham who's work particularly resonated with my ambition to bridge between London and Rio.

"This was a unique five day project - workshops, symposia and live events - supported and organised by the British Council in Brasil and the UK, hosted by the Museum of Image and Sound in Sao Paulo and the Centro Cultural de Brasil, with support also from the Mondriaan Foundation and the Virtueel Platform in the Netherlands and the Arts & Humanities Research Council in the UK."

Lightbridge - London>Rio

I asked Adrian Hughes (MSc) Geospatial Information Science specialist at Foster and Partners in London, on an evening where meeting up with an old friend in the all familiar Battersea, became a scientific virtual expedition to work out the distance and bearing of a brisge between London and Rio. The proposed concept was to create a lightbridge that would connect these two spaces on a particular date and time. Adrian made this idea possible after a chat and some sketches.

From my location in South London to Ivan Henriques' location in the city centre of Rio, a line was drawn to connect these two geographic points. A distance covering 9289km, most of which is over the Atlantic Ocean.

Using gps coordinates to calculate the bearing between London and Rio, in order that an uninterrupted line could be drawn between the two cities. Drawing this line on a map, starting from each artist's position, they each followed this line until they reached the coast. This was both the location and angle that each would have to point their cameras towards. One camera at each end of the bridge.

With sunrise beginning in the UK 3 hours earlier, on Sunday March 1st 2009, Ivan and I found ourselves in perfect synchrony, supported by the natural course of rotation that the sun takes around the earth. A lightbridge was consequently captured, using our good will (to be up before the birds), a compass (to direct us), a trustworthy assistant, a camera and a punctual clock as tools. We filmed at parallel times, where the fixed point landscape the camera framed, became the vehicle to illustrating how this lightbridge was possible. Observing the change of light and sounds being revealed from Astronal twilight, starting at 4:54am in the sleepy seaside town of Selsey on the West Sussex Coast of England, and ending at Sunrise, at 5:47am in fervent Rio de Janeiro, somewhere just left of Santos Dummont national airport.

This work was fruit of my inability to be physically present in Brazil at a certain point in time where a family situation made it impossible for me to travel. Further still, it was born out of a wish to bring two very important places in my life closer together, having been separated from Brazil in 1989 when I moved with my mother and stepfather to London when I was 12 years old. 25 years later, my mother insisted on being with me on that March morning in Selsey, to film the horizon towards Brazil. As my mother was by side, I had an immense feeling that perhaps the biggest bridge that I was revealing and strengthening was infact to that person standing physically right by my side. This work would not have been made possible without Ivan Henriques who was there in Rio at the time we arranged it. This work illustrated the essence and strength of any collaboration. Throughout 2009 Ivan and I worked intensively together syncing up out times and practice's to produce work. Which brings up the thought that without another, perhaps we cannot achieve anything at all.

Light Bridge- Ponte de Luz, é um trabalho artístico com o especialista de Ciencia de informações Geoespaciais, Adrian Hughes, velho amigo que encontrei uma tarde em Battersea para conversar sobre esta ponte virual. Voltando para casa, conversei com Ivan que aceitou fazer parte deste evento, gravando o outro lado da ponte com sua numa certa data e hora no Rio de Janeiro.

A proposta do conceito artístico foi criar uma ponte de luz que conecta dois espaços distintos geograficamente, numa data e hora particular.
Da locação da Silvia , em sul de Londres, para a locação de Ivan no centro do rio de Janeiro, a coordenada entre as duas pessoas foi calculada e uma linha conecta estes dois pontos. A distância cobre 9289km, na sua maior parte, o oceano atlantico.

Ao desenhar esta linha no mapa, ela direciona cada artista na posição correta. A posição de ambos é na costa e a angulação das câmeras em sentido para qual deve apontar. No dia 1° de março, O nascer do Sol começa no Reino Unido 3 horas antes, com a rotação natural da terra.Uma ponte de luz foi consequentemente capturada, utlilizando nossa boa vontade (estar acordado antes dos pássaros), um compasso (para nos direcionar), um assistente de confiança, uma filmadora e um relógio pontual.

Filmando em tempos paralelos, colocaram as câmeras em um ponto fixo. Observando a mudança de luz e som sendo revelado pelo crepúsculo astronal, começando as 4.54am na cidade de Selsey, no oeste da costa Inglesa, em Sussex, terminando no nascer do sol as 5.57am, no caloroso Rio de Janeiro, ao lado do aeroporto nacional Santos Dumont.

Este trabalho foi fruto da minha incapacidade de estar presente físicamente no Brasil em um certo momento por uma situação familiar de causa maior, e um desejo de aproximar dois lugares muito importantes na minha vida após a vivência de ter me separado do Brazil em 1989, quando fui morar com minha mãe e padrasto em Londres com apenas 12 anos. 25 anos depois, a minha mãe fez questão de estar comigo naquela madrugada de Março em Selsey, quando fui filmar o horizonte para o Brasil. Enquanto a minha mãe estava do meu lado, me deparei com um enorme sentimento que talvez a maior ponte que ali estava se revelando e fortalecendo era com a pessoa físicamente do meu lado.

Este trabalho não teria sido possível sem Ivan, que estava lá no Rio no momento que nós marcamos. O trabalho ilustra a essência e a força de qualquer colaboração. A da presença. Ao longo de 2009 Ivan e eu trabalhamos intensamente juntos, sincronizando nossos tempos e práticas para produzir. Esta experiência me faz pensar que talvez não possamos alcançar nada sem o outro. E como é difícil achar aqueles com que você pode contar.

Experimental Mobile Studio

This is a vehicle that will begin its operations by travelling around Rio de Janeiro's Guanabara Bay, hosting individual artists with one month residencies, who will use the Bay as their principal concern to create multi-media site-specific art interventions. The vehicle is a customized camper van equipped with audio and video production equipment and a facility for workshops aimed at young people from the local communities. Institutitions, NGOs and schools are invited to collaborate as key contributers.

This project is being supported by Rio de Janeiro's Secretary of Culture.

EME Residency objectives:

• Make available tools which are increasingly used in contemporary art practice
• Highlight art practice made in video and sound
• Present theoretical concepts of the image and sound spatiality & temporality
• Bring art from the capital effectively to the suburbs
• Reflect on Ecology and Art. The Guanabara Bay as principle ‘raw’ material
• Create ideal solutions for current social and environmental decline
• Produce a publication with the project’s results and critical texts.
• Exhibit the EME mobile studio as a platform for interactive multi-media art.

Este veiculo começa sua operação viajando entorno a Baia de Guanabara, no Rio de Janeiro, recebendo artistas que ficarão um mês em residência, onde usarão a baia como conceito para criar uma intervenção artística multimídia. O veículo é uma kombi customizada com equipamentos de áudio e vídeo e que além das intervenções os artistas realizarão workshops direcionados para adolescentes das comunidades locais em volta da baia de Guanabara. Instituições, ONGs e escolas são contempladas, sendo contribuidores chaves.

Parte do projeto é financiado pela Secretaria de Cultura do Rio de Janeiro.

Soundscapes - a field research:

> On September 28th, the "Expedition -which became known as - Sunday " departed on a rainy Sunday from Rio city towards Ilha Grande, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, via the cities of Mangaratiba and then Angra do Reis, where the ferry was taken to cross the chanel. After a local's remark that on the Island: "every monday is sunny!" the three adventurers went to rest from their turbulent and wet journey, sleeping to the sound of frogs, crickets and other insects which the eyes could not reach. Bjarne Kvinnsland was the first to awake, with the sound of birds and the sun shinning on the sand. With Ivan Henriques and Silvia Leal they went together towards Lopes Mendes beach. It was a 6hr walk with the right to much sound, sun, water and fish.

This Monday 29th, a tremendous Sunday! the three, equiped, captured the sounds of Guibos monkeys, Humming-birds, butterflies, birds, bats, ships, children, foot-steps, insects, trees, running water amongst other sounds. These sounds amplified were located upon a map. Creating 'soundscapes', which can be distinguished, for being cultural and/or natural sounds present in the evironment covered.

Up to which point must we walk to notice the different sounds in the environement? At which point do we stop hearing the strong sea waves and instead hear so clearly the song of a Sabiá bird which participates in the space?

This is an ongoing research project between Brazil, UK and Norway approaching the concept of Soundscapes. How space may be mapped according to sound-wise interesting spaces, and digital recorded material presented artistically to evoke an appreciation and preservation of our natural and built environment.

No dia 28 de Setembro, a "Expedição - que veio a ser conhecida como - Sunday" partiu da cidade do Rio num Domingo chuvoso em direção a Ilha Grande, no estado do Rio de Janeiro, via as cidades de Mangaratiba e depois Angra do Reis, onde atravessaram o canal de barco. Após uma exclamação local da Ilha de que: 'toda segunda faz sol!' os 3 aventureiros foram descansar da sua jornada turbulenta e molhada, dormindo assim ao som de sapos, grilos e outros insetos que os olhos não podiam alcançar.
Bjarne Kvinnsland foi um dos primeiros a acordar, com o som dos pássaros e sol brilhando na areia, e com Ivan Henriques e Silvia Leal seguiram para a Praia Lopes Mendes. Foram 6hrs de caminhada com direito à muito som, sol, água e peixe.

Esta segunda-feira dia 29, um tremendo sunday! Os forasteiros, equipados, captaram sons de: macacos-guibos, beija-flores, borboletas, pássaros, morcegos, navios, crianças, pegadas, insetos, árvores, água corrente, entre outros. Estes sons ampliados foram localizados sobre um mapa da ilha. Criando 'soundscapes', que podem ser distingüidos, por serem sons culturais e/ou naturais presentes no meio-ambiente percorrido.

Até qual ponto precisamos caminhar para notar a diferenças sonoras do ambiente?
Em qual ponto paramos de ouvir as ondas ferozes do mar e ao invez, escurtar tão nitidamente um canto de sabiá que participa do espaço? Até qual ponto escutamos o movimento de barcos da ilha e os guibos gritando na floresta de Bambus?

Esta é uma pesquisa entre o Brasil, o Reino Unido e a Noruega sobre baseado no cenceito de Soundscapes. Como o espaço pode ser mapeado de acordo com espaços interessantes por seu conteudo sonoro, e o material gravado apresentado artisticamente para evocar a apreciação e preservação do meio-ambiente.

> This Saturday 20th September, a GEMA activity tool place Led by Artists Ivan Henriques and Silvia Leal, this was a group performance in the neighbourhood of Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro. Together with 4 short-listed participants from UFF univeristy, the group took art from plan to space, into the public realm. A throw of luck upon a map directed each participant to where, within a kilometer of their starting point at Castelinho do Flamengo, they would each carry out a questionnaire with passers by. Together with urban arquitect Aline Couri, the open questionnaire was designed to engage the public in associatiing, reflecting and observing the landscape they are in within a short space of time. The participants of the group acted independently for 1 hour before meeting for tea and cake and discuss their experience and findings. 100 questionnaires were completed which began an experimental cartography of the city from the public's perspective.

Neste Sábado 20 de Setembro, foi realizado uma atividade GEMA. Foram convidados para este evento os artistas Ivan Henriques (BR) e Silvia Leal (GB) mais quatro estudantes de Produção Cultural (UFF): Mozileide Barbosa, Caio Branco, Felipe Coquito e Ana Maria Delpomo.
A reunião começou no Castelinho do Flamengo (Centro Cultural Oduvaldo Viana Filho). Após uma apresentação dos artistas sobre o conceito e o grupo GEMA, a atividade iniciou. Em cima de um mapa focado no Aterro do Flamengo, Glória e Catete, uma circunferência foi desenhada, onde o Castelinho do Flamengo serviu como eixo central, com um diâmetro de 1km. A partir deste perímetro demarcado, como num jogo de dados, foram lançados 6 papeis relativos aos 6 participantes, dentro deste circulo ao redor do castelo. De uma ação bidimensional para uma ação tridimensional. Do plano para o espaço. Uma decisão aleatória indicou para cada um para onde ir e efetuar um questionário com os transeuntes que por lá passavam. Cada um partiu em sua direção e se reuniram novamente às 15:00h.

Embaixo de um coqueiro no Parque do Flamengo, chá Inglês e bolo de laranja foram servidos enquanto o grupo discutia a pesquisa e os resultados de 120 questionários realizados com o público nesta tarde de sol.

The two groups Laranjas (Oranges) and GEMA (Yolk) meet for the production of an orange cake, to be taken and consumed at the Fruit & Veg Market in neighbourhood of Glória, where the 'La Rica' event was taking place this Sunday 7th September 2008, during the market's normal functioning hours. The meeting gave way for a discussion, together with special guest Prof. Paulo Roberto Abreu, Master of Philosophy, about the base materials of both collectives, within the context of urban intervention in public spaces. GEMA, an agglutinant, opened its oven doors for the confection of a cake celebrating the 136 years of independence of our loved native land.

Bolo comemora o Dia da Independência do Brasil

Os dois grupos Laranja e Gema se reunem para a produção de um bolo de laranja, para ser levado e consumido na Feira da Gloria, Rua Augusto Severo RJ, onde o evento La Rica ocorria neste Domingo 7 Setembro 2008, durante o periodo normal da feira. O encontro viabilizou uma discussão com convidado especial Prof. Paulo Roberto Abreu MA Filosofia, sobre os materiais bases dos 2 coletivos, dentro do contexto de produção e intervenção urbana em espaços públicos. O GEMA como aglutinador, abriu sua porta e forno para confecção do bolo de comemoração dos 136 anos de independência da pátria amada.

> The cake arrived still warm whilst MC Shuparina was presenting. The public helped themselves to the cake served and the party rolled on until the arrival of munincipal guards found reason to interrupt the event.

It was explained that residents of building opposite had complained of the indecent assault which apparently took place on this Sunday afternoon.

O bolo chegou quentinho enquanto MC Shuparina apresentava. O público se serviu e a festa rolou até a chegada de um grupo de guardas munincipais que haviam razão para interromper o evento.

Foi explicado que moradores do predio em frente haviam reclamado sobre o atentado ao pudor que ocorria neste domingo a tarde.

Por acaso alguns dos convidados La Rica haviam equipamento de gravação portátil e foram reprimidos verbalmente por um dos policiais.

Operação: Burro sem Rabo

Será realizado o 1° Encontro ECBR na cidade do Rio de Janeiro.
O 1° Encontro Carioca dos Burro sem Rabo, reunirá um grupo interessado em desenvolver e participar ativamente de um projeto urbano-artístico.
É idealizado para todos aqueles que querem aplicar a sua experiência profissional e interesse na criação de possíveis 'cidades utópicas' e/ou 'cidades invisiveis'.
Profissionais de múltiplas práticas dentro de todas as disciplinas afins serão convidadas a recriar, junto aos profissionais catadores de lixo, recicláveis de resíduos urbanos, um novo espaço de convivência.
A sugestão do Grupo Experimental Multidisciplinar Autônomo foi o ´Passeio Publico´ obra de Mestre Valentim, 1793, no centro da cidade. Um levantamento de dados dos transeuntes sobre este espaço público e o evento ECBR está sendo realizado neste mês de Julho (2008).

A não partida nem quebrada > The non-departure and no break

> This was a site-specific performance at Rio's International Airport. Where I interviewed passengers boarding on the 0246 British Airways flight to London on the flight I was supposed to be taking back myself. Having decided to stay in Rio and not being able to change the date of my flight I went to the airport, with only a laptop case filled with 36 eggs. I approached the passengers at check-in, whilst the passengers waited for their turn for a check-in desk to become available, I asked each passener to give me a word, a word to describe a reason to stay in Brazil. I briefly described I had decided to stay in Rio to continue developing the concept of GEMA and that their participation was part of making a little history of a day's travel.

The result of this performance was the collection of 36 words.
In return for participating, the passengers were given a copy of a limited edition print of this site's page 1, dated 16/07/08, which I asked to take back with them to London. If they were to throw it away I asked them at least to do it once they arrived in the UK.

The day was recorded in video by Finnish Artist Sirkku Maenpaa. And the event marked the beginning of GEMA's activity in Rio de Janeiro and my commitment to staying in Rio de Janeiro instead of going back to London for the time being.

Este trabalho consiste de um registro. Passageiros embarcando para Londres no voo 0246 da British Airways dia 16/07/08 foram abordados durante check-in para participar nesta pequena história pessoal. Eu perguntei para os passageiros se ele podiam me dar uma palavra, uma palavra que eles consideravam descrever uma razão para permanecer no Brasil. 36 passageiros participaram, portanto colecionei 36 palavras.

As entrevistas foram registradas em video por Sirkku Maenpaa, artista finlandesa. Por terem participado, os 36 colaboradores receberam 1 impressão de 36 edições limitadas deste blog page 1, data 16/07/08, para levar de volta com eles para a Inglaterra. Por meio da Internet podem manter informados sobre os projetos GEMA acontecendo no Brazil.

Arte para Crianças- MAM Rio de Janeiro.

> I think GEMA should begin with education. Highlighting the importance of art as a means for children and adults alike to be inspired through creative practical activities, complementing our sense of communication and self-awareness. I write from an experiment I developed designing workshops to provide a basis from which young people can develop self-esteem and discipline. A series of workshops took place for children from the Júlio Otoni community in Santa Teresa between the ages of 8-12 Using traditional art tools; painting, drawing, observation, colour, object-making and composition as well as new media technologies; sound, photography, video and editing. This work was developed in collaboration with the Institute of Psychiatry at UFRJ, and mentored by Artist and Art Therapist Eliane Santos. A visit to the exhibition ' Art for children' at MAM Rio, was realized as a group. The children were enchanted with the works of art, among them ' Wish Tree' and 'Onochord' by Yoko Ono, the animation ; Histórias da Unha do Dedão do Pé do Fim do Mundo', with poems by Manoel de Barros (1916, Cuiabá), script by author Bianca Ramoneda. drawings by Evandro Salles and directed by Marcia Roth, as well as Ernesto Neto's instalation 'Womb'. It is important to comment how the children, accompanied by a guardian, had not been to the Museum and were happy to learn this was a free exhibition, in a public space which also belongs to them. It was an afternoon filled with happiness and inspiration.

Eu acho que o GEMA deve começar com a educação. Sublinhando a importância da Arte como um meio para crianças e assim como adultos a serem inspirados por uma atividade prática artística, ajudando a nossa abilidade de comunicação e nossa consciência pessoal. Workshop de artes podem viabilizra uma base onde podemos desenvolver o auto-estima e a disciplina. Uma série de workshops foram criadas da comunidade Júlio Otoni em Santa Teresa entre as idades de 8-12. Usando ferramentas tradicionais de arte visual: pintura, desenho, cor, objetos, composição, assim como mídias de tecnologia; som, fotografia, vídeo e edição. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido em colaboração ao Instituto de Psiquiatria da UFRJ, Mentora artista e arte-terapêuta Eliane Santos. Fizemos uma visita a exposição nacional 'Arte para Crianças' no MAM, Rio, foi realizada em grupo. As crianças ficaram encantados com as obras, entre eles 'As Árvores dos Desejos' e 'Onochord' de Yoko Ono, a animação 'Histórias da Unha do Dedão do Pé do Fim do Mundo', com poemas de Manoel de Barros (1916, Cuiabá), roteirizados pela escritora e atriz Bianca Ramoneda, com desenhos de Evandro Salles e direção de arte de Marcia Roth, assim como instalaçao 'Útero' de Ernesto Neto. É importante comentar que as crianças, acompanhados por um guardião, não conheciam o Museu e ficaram muito felizes de saber que a exposição era grátis, que este espaço público pertence a eles tambem. Foi uma tarde muito feliz e inspiradora.
